You need to go download the firmware from the creative site and it will stop freezing.

Thanks, Sinead. Fortunately I got an 8GB one today, with a 4 GB card... just as well! Bit fiddly compared with my old Cowon, and it's frozen out on me a few times, but hopefully I'll get to grips with it soon!

Cheers for your words of wisdom! At least I can stop farting around now trying to get the SD card to show up in library!

All the best!

You'd be better off getting the 8GB Zen if you want around 6GB of storage. You see, the SD card slot is designed to give you access to files stored on an SD Card rather than to increase the overall storage of the device. Any mp3s or videos stored on an SD Card won't be included in the library on the device - so although you can play the files, you are unable to add them to playlists, or pause them and come back to them later. Creative might fix this issue with a firmware update in the near future.

Hi Sinead.

Well done with the site - very good piece on the Zen, which I'm thinking of buying after my Cowon iAudio gave up the ghost after I dropped it while on holiday after one Bacardi too many. Was a great player, and had a line-in jack to encode MP3s from any sound source... a feature that's increasingly rare (I don't think it's on the Zen?).

Would you mind telling me how the SD card works? I have around 4.4 GB of files, so if I bought a 4GB Zen and bunged a 2GB card into it, does that effectively make it a 6GB Zen?

[...] Back in November I wrote that the next gadget that I was going to buy was the Creative Zen, and believe it or not, I did. That’s actually quite unusual for me, as more often than not a total information overload (damm Internet!) usually leaves me undecided for a very long time. At the last minute I almost listened to the little voice that said “What about that cheap iPod? It could double as an external hard drive” even though I don’t need one. I’m glad I didn’t listen because I’m totally in love with my Zen. It’s so perfect for me. Perfect size for watching a few videos now and again, perfect for popping into my pocket to walk down the road listening to some tunes. Perfect for flicking onto the radio to catch a news/traffic bulletin… oh, and the microphone is going to eventually come in handy during lectures (at least that’s the idea). It also has this one shortcut button that you can assign to open any application on the player - mine simply plays all my songs on shuffle, it’s seriously handy. You know what? I can’t imagine an iPod being so versatile… at all. Accessories wise, I bought a case for it but haven’t felt the need to actually use it, because it feels so sturdy in your palm. I also got a pair of Sony headphones (the standard creative ones in the box are seriously low end) and one of those sticky screen protectors so I don’t scratch it whilst it’s bouncing around with my keys and change. There are some minor drawbacks, however. This IS of course the case with most technology these days (what, you expect it to work out of the box?!) Despite what the sales people drone, even an iPod won’t play your DVDs for you straight out of the box. A number of minor tweaks are required. [...]
