Psychology is all about understanding, explaining, and predicting human behavior. We are fascinated by our own behaviour and those of us around us. By understanding behaviour we hope to gain insights into how our minds work and perhaps how to change our undesirable behaviour. An understanding of human behaviour can also lead to the design of good software, hardware and even guide policy writing relating to technology.

These days technology like the iPhone helps us to track our own personal habits, Twitter gives us an insight into popular topics and analytics give us fascinating web usage statistics. Whilst technology has greatly enhanced our ability to collect interesting data about human behaviour, it’s important to realise that using such data to make conclusions about why we behave in such a way is unwise without investigating the differences between causality and correlation. Take for example the problematic question of whether the Internet is addictive or if addicts use the Internet.

The Relationship Between Psychology and Technology

Only thorough psychological research can investigate the motivations behind our behaviour. All of the modern day branches of psychology are governed by extremely strict rules that ensure that only legitimate and ethical research is conducted and published, and said research employs extensive statistical analyses on data derived from various methods including interviews, questionnaires, experiments, etc.

It is for these reasons that I believe that the relationship between psychology and technology needs to be much stronger. If we use psychology to understand and explain our interactions with technology today, we can help our future selves by using this information to make technology more accessible, usable and helpful for everyone.

There is absolutely no escaping the fact that one day you will be old. Most people regard getting older to be a physical decline, a frailty of the body, without considering the cognitive and social changes that occur as you age. It is for this reason that I take an interest in Irish research centres like the NCBI Centre for Inclusive Technology and the CASALA Centre (soon to open in Dundalk IT) who aim to improve future technologies by conducting cognitive and social psychological research with older adults and people with disabilities.

In today’s Irish Times an article describes the recent Business of Ageing conference held in Dublin, highlights some of the fantastic assisted living technologies being developed here in Ireland and suggests this country could be a leader in developing technology for older adults.

Let’s hope this prediction comes true. Not only would I love to work in this area of research and development, I for one would like to continue being an early adopter of new technologies. I would be incredibly angry if, as I got older technology slipped out of my reach, the way the majority of older adults are excluded today.

Will someone let me know when it stops raining in Ireland? I feel like it’s been going non stop since last year.

The increase in rain fall over the Summer might have something to do with why there aren’t any small birds visiting my garden any more. Cold and rain equals less insects, so I wonder if that has meant they’ve moved on or the chicks didn’t survive to Autumn. Though the crows and magpies certainly are benefiting, they’ve been knocking our full bird feeders over and gorging themselves. Cheeky buggars.

I wish the sparrows, finches and robins would come back to brighten these dreary days.

When I was in Primary School one of the boys in my class had a seizure in the middle of Irish lessons. Being children, we were frightened by how his body seemed to shake unnaturally and though he never had another seizure in class again, there was always a sense of unease around him. Looking back, I realise that his remaining school days could have been far happier, if only his classmates had been properly educated about his epilepsy. Instead words like “fit” and phrases like “foaming at the mouth” were passed from the adults to us.

I never reflected upon this, until Mam had her first seizure.

It was only then that I learned how much misinformation there is about epilepsy, and how much ignorance and unjust prejudice there is. For example, a layman understanding of epilepsy is the photosensitive form which is a reaction to strobe/flashing lights, but only 3-5% of people with epilepsy actually suffer from this.

My first source of information has always been the organisation Brainwave. Thanks to them I was able to educate myself, and in doing so I was able to prepare myself for the next seizure (this is a straightforward and simple guide to first aid for seizures [pdf] that *everyone* should read). In understanding epilepsy, it stopped being scary.

I often wonder if my hysterical reaction to Mam’s first seizure would have differed if I had been taught to understand why it was happening and informed as to what an epileptic seizure looked like. I now know that sometimes during a seizure a person can go blue in the face; but I had no clue about this during her first seizure and went into a total and utter panic. More importantly, if I had known how to recognize a seizure from the start, I would have been better able to report this to the doctors in A&E – who were adamant that the seizure followed her cracking her head open on the tiles of the frozen food aisle. I was certain that it was the opposite way around. But they wouldn’t give her a diagnosis, or run any tests, or treat her… until consecutive seizures followed.

Thanks to Brainwave we learnt how a seizure isn’t a dramatic emergency (unless she had hurt herself, like the first time) and that she could easily recover without the need for doctors or emergency rooms (thank god). Luckily for Mam, once she was medicated she stopped having seizures, except for the occasional nocturnal seizure. More recently she has also managed to be weaned off her medication, after going a couple of years seizure free (yey!).

Not everyone is that lucky though, and without Brainwave there would be a total lack of information and support for sufferers. As you can see from what’s been discussed here already, being educated about epilepsy in Ireland is falling solely to them. Unfortunately Brainwave is not a government run organisation and they rely on donations to continue providing support, information, advice and improving public understanding of epilepsy.

That’s why I’ll be attending their benefit night “The Horse Show Hustle” on August the 7th – tickets are on sale here. For €33 you can dance the night away with the satisfaction of knowing the proceeds will be going to an organisation that is greatly needed in Ireland (if you can’t make it to the show you can alternatively make a donation via MyCharity.ie).

I definitely needed them, and in the future, someone close to you might need them too.

Irish Blog Research 2009, Survey Goes Live

As part of the M.Sc Cyberpsychology at IADT each postgraduate student is currently in the process of conducting a major research project. My own is focused on blogging, but from an Irish perspective, looking at the attitudes and behaviour of Irish bloggers and Irish blog readers. (Related Article)

Online Survey

At the very heart of this research study is an online survey which you can find here. I’m hoping to recruit a large sample of both bloggers and non-blogging readers. If you’re reading this, I’m assuming you fit into one of these categories and would very much appreciate it if you could spare 10-15 minutes to fill out the survey. Most of the questions are multiple choice, a small number are essay based but you can write as much, or as little as you like. This questionnaire is 100% anonymous, confidential and for research purposes only. Even your IP address won’t be stored.

Prize Draws!

At the end of the survey you will have the opportunity to enter a prize draw for either a €50 Amazon voucher or a €50 Ticketmaster voucher – if you win, you can choose either prize.

I’m also going to run a separate prize draw for another €50 voucher for anyone that posts a link to this survey on their blog, or on a messageboard – anywhere really! To enter this separate draw just leave a comment on this blog post, this can be in the form of a trackback or a comment telling me where you have posted the link.

Thank You!

Thank you in advance for your help, without the Irish blogging community on my side this research won’t be complete. The hard part will be finding non-blogging readers to complete the survey, so if you know anyone that would fit that category please pass the link for the survey onto them.

As a way of giving something back to the blogging community I will be publishing summaries of the most interesting findings here on this blog. If you would like to be notified when the entire research document is available for download – this will be a masters thesis of approximately 15,000 words, with an introduction to the psychogical aspects of blogging – you can enter your details on this form.

A relatively inexpensive wireless technology that has been developed by Intel, with underdeveloped countries in mind, could work for rural Ireland.

The new technology can extend a wi-fi signal between two antennas up to a maximum of 96 miles. Considering Ireland is only about 190 miles wide, why not implement this kind of system? Rather than forcing Irish rural and island internet users to connect via ridiculously expensive satellite systems or leaving them lagging behind on dial-up.

Will someone please let the Department of “Communications” know about this, because according to Silicon Republic (and everyone else in the country) Ireland is below the EU Broadband average, and it’s all down to the rural “deficit”.

I was fortunate enough to get Sufjan Stevens tickets this week, right before it sold out (he’s playing in the Olympia in November). I’m lucky I remembered that the tickets were going on sale, as the heat this week has really melted my brain.

Thankfully though the “heat wave” has finally begun to subside. Waking up on Tuesday at 8am to find it’s already 22′c is not pleasant, apparently it was the hottest day of the century (so far), with temperatures reaching 30′c here in Dublin. The horror. This kind of freakish weather always make me ponder global warming, I was so worried in fact that I actually rejoiced when it started to rain yesterday.

Since I’m having a rant about Ireland I might as well mention the CIA World Factbook. Which contains various facts about every country in the world, the most interesting fact on Ireland that I found was: as of 2003 the annual electricity generated in Ireland was 23.41 billion kWh. That figure is the lowest when compared to other European countries.

It’s no wonder that we import so much gas, and why the state agency Forfas is promoting Nuclear Power – which is actually insane considering how radioactive the Irish Sea already is because of 1 Nuclear Power plant, that isn’t even IN Ireland.

Nuclear Power is like a “get rich quick scheme”, it seems like an obvious and easy solution to a country’s energy crisis, but all get rich quick schemes involve some kind of illicit activities. If only someone could wake up and realise that we are sitting on a gold mine of electrical power, and it comes from the 4 elements that nature provides for us: wind, water, earth and sun. We’ve plenty of those, so why not use them? Yes, the initial setup costs would be expensive, but the after-care costs of Nuclear Power are far greater.

Another interesting fact that I read in the CIA World Factbook: the ethic groups residing in Ireland are; Celtic and English. I think this needs a dramatic overhaul, from personal experience working in Dublin, almost 80% of my customers are neither Celtic OR English.

Oxegen was good fun. It rained from the moment we got there until late Sunday afternoon, but it didn’t stop us enjoying ourselves. I spent a considerable amount of time inside my tent on Saturday because of the rain, but as usual, Jen kept my spirits high. I can’t think of anyone else I’d rather be stuck in a tent with. We caught the Strokes (who I think were better the first time I saw them play) and the Who (I was surprised by how many of their songs I actually know) on Saturday, and a few bands on Sunday – the highlight being Placebo and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

I didn’t enjoy camping this year, because of the rain and high winds. Next year I’m just going to get a taxi home, seeing as my house is only 20 minutes away. Camping is definitely going on my hate list. Camping in Ireland is just too unpredictable. On Sunday morning I was horrifed to find many tents (and rain covers) had blown away in the wind, I was just thankful that I was paranoid enough to really pin ours down. Most of the pegs broke and the tent was (sadly) unsalvagable, and I left it there. It’s probably a pile of ash somewhere in Punchestown.

So… I learnt something at the weekend – I’m getting old.

I really missed my home comforts – like dry clothes! We bought new jumpers there, surprisingly cheap too. Another thing that made me realise I’m getting old – an argument I had with some “men” selling Meteor Ponchos – which are actually given out free at the beginning of the festival, they were selling them for €5. I pointed it out to one of these “men” and got verbally abused, by a grown “man”. Now that I think of it, I also had a gripe with a stall there that sold me a pint of milk for €4. I always had the understanding that selling milk at a premium is actually illegal.

GOD! I really am getting old.
